The original Spiral Jetty by Robert Smithson has been a huge inspiration for me. I think his work was incredible and beneficial towards the earth. Here I attempted to recreate the spiral jetty in a miniature form. Students were assigned to create an installation in nature using a bag of dirt. I have never had so much creative freedom in any class. This was also done in New Orleans, while I ran from hurricane Irma.
Davis Island, a place for inspiration and rock assembling. Here in this image I stacked a cluster of large boulders and then stood a smaller wedge shaped rock on top. I wanted the rock form to be apart of the sunset without being a forced element in nature. Being able to build an installation piece through physical labor gives me a more personal connection to the artwork. After taking ART 463 I have decided to focus more time on Installation artwork.

Normally I am used to creating gravity glues with smoother rocks. I was raised in Vermont and Connecticut, where the rivers create a very spherical rock form. This allows me to stack rocks in many different ways. Florida tends to consist of shelly and rough rocks. Even though the process is a little bit different. The roughness of the Florida rocks almost gives you a fixed route of which ways to assemble the objects. The installation is about six feet tall and fell after a week.
